Sturgis Countdown: 5 Facts To Fill Your Motorcycle Helmet

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

2010 marks the 70th anniversary of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle rally in South Dakota.

Likely, the anticipation is already filling your head with thoughts of future daring, danger – and perhaps – debauchery.  If you’ll allow us, we’d like to take just a few minutes away from the thoughts filling your head to honor the legacy of this rally with five facts to fill your motorcycle helmet.

(What’s with the play on words, by the way?  We sell motorcycle helmets.  You caught us.  And we can get you a new one prior to Sturgis.)

In honor of Sturgis turning 70, here are five things you may not know:

The now famous Sturgis rally was started by the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle club. In a world where the average age for a motorcycle club is three years, the Jackpine Gypsies stand out at ripe old age of 74.

The original Sturgis rally in 1938 featured only nine motorcycle racers and a small crowd in attendance to watch.  Nowadays, of course, you may find nine motorcycle racers sharing one tent, much less vying for space on a track

Sturgis has been held every year since its founding, with lone exceptions happening during World War II.

For years, hundreds have declared their love by getting married on site at Sturgis.  Want to join them?  Here’s the link.

Among the most common, and expensive, city ordinances broken at Sturgis are ‘Indecent Exposure’, ‘Depositing of Filth’ and ‘Driving on Sidewalk’ – running about $111 each.  This year, save some money and keep it clean.  After all – we just got a new shipment of Raceway Skull Reflective Leather Jackets in stock.
