As with any DIY project, you’ll save time and frustration if you gather all the items needed to winterize your motorcycle. If you can change the oil in your car, you can easily winterize your own bike and save the cost of storing it offsite. The tender loving care you’ll give your bike will also go a long way toward enhancing motorcycle safety.
Where to Store Your Winterized Bike
Since you’ve decided to forgo paying for storage, you don’t want to end up paying for the mistake of storing your bike in a poor location. Ideally, you want to store your bike in a windowless room or area because ultraviolet light can fade paint and plastic parts.

Did you know that the Department of Transportation (DOT) or the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) does not “approve” motorcycle helmets? So, to say that any motorcycle helmet is DOT-certified is inaccurate.
What’s in a Name?
To clarify, the NHTSA has the authority to issue Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) applicable to motor vehicle equipment, including motorcycle helmets. But, there is no list of “approved” helmets. Compliant motorcycle helmet manufacturers certify that their products are in compliance with FMVSS No. 218, which establishes minimum performance requirements that the products must meet.

Did you know that May was Motorcycle Awareness Month? Although, May is over for this year you can keep your safety awareness high, year round, with these motorcycle tips.
- Choose the Correct Clothing – Choosing the right clothing while riding helps protect your body from sun and road exposure. In the summer, motorcycle vests provide a barrier from gravel and dirt dust up, especially when you’re off road. While wearing leather in heat seems crazy to non-riders, it actually acts as insulation from the elements; if it rains, your chest is kept dry; when it’s sunny, the interior shell wicks away perspiration. Plus, riding without sleeves is a lot cooler than wearing a leather jacket.

Ask anyone in the New York City area and they will tell you that winter is nothing to joke about. In the past few weeks residents of the Big Apple were witness to one of the worst blizzards in history as 20 inches of snow brought everything to a halt. Although there are probably few brave enough to weather a blizzard on their bike, you don’t have to park your bike in the garage all winter long. Although motorcycles and cold temps don’t mix well, during more moderate winter weather there may be some that are unwilling or unable to give up their mean machines. There are a few things that can be done in order to help ensure safety while tackling those icy roads.

Choosing a motorcycle is like choosing your soul mate. It takes time and tons of research to find your one true love, but once you set eyes on it you just know that is the bike you are meant to spend the rest of your life with. Just like when you are with that girl of your dreams, when riding down the open road you want to make sure you look your best even if down deep inside you know the bike is the one people will be staring at. As high up the priority list as looking good is though, being safe on your bike is second to none. At speeds of 65-75 mph you need as much protection as you can get between you and the asphalt. This is why picking out a good helmet is just as important as choosing between beach bars and ape hangers.

June 12 – 20th marked Laconia Motorcycle Week in Laconia, New Hampshire. This year’s event, which we were unfortunately not able to attend, happily marked the 87th anniversary of these festivities.
In the article, Segelstrom, a nationally certified motorcycle riding coach with over 35 years experience, highlights some of the key mistakes a rider will make just prior to an accident:
“Most of the time with a motorcyclist involved in an accident, they fail to negotiate a turn,” Segelstrom said. “And slightly under that it’s improper braking resulting in a collision, whether they didn’t brake enough or too much.”
